How do I verify module accuracy?
Long story short, they believe the modules may be less accurate than specified. The biggest error seems to be a low voltage (1-2V), with error decreasing as Vin approaches 10V.

The biggest error at low voltage with error decreasing as Vin approaches 10V means that they are calculating error as % of reading.
Accuracy of Dataforth modules is specified and calculated as % of Span. The method is the following.

Set the test voltage.
Apply it to the module input.
Measure the voltage at the module input.
Calculate the expected module output voltage using the measured input voltage.
Measure the output voltage.
Calculate the % of Span error by the following formula.

Accuracy error % Span = ((Measured Vout – Calculated Vout) / Output Span V ) x 100

This method works for input or output modules.

I have a Thermocouple input module, do I need a Cold Junction Compensation sensor?

On a DSCAxx-xxC, -xxE, is an external load resistor required in order to convert the output loop current to a voltage?
An external load resistor is required only if the input does not have an internal current to voltage conversion resistor.
Find out the maximum load resistance the output can drive. The maximum load resistance the DSCAxx-xxC, -xxE output can drive is 600 Ohms.
Find out the voltage range the input can accept. Be sure to include the voltage drop at 20mA for the resistance of the length of the lead wires. To calculate the required load resistance, divide the maximum input voltage required by 20mA. The result is the load resistance your application needs to operate properly.

Example: Rin = Vin / 20mA Rin = 10V / 0.02A = 500 Ohms
Lead wire margin allowance example:
Vwire = Rout max x 20mA – Vin Vwire = 600 Ohms x 0.02A – 10V = 12V – 10V = 2V

Do I need a PC connected to Record to MAQ20 SD Card?
It is true you do not need to have a PC connected to record the data to the SD card.
However, you will need the PC connected in order to set up what to record and how much and to start recording, refer to the MAQ20-COM2/-COM4 Hardware User Manual, Section 13.0 SD Card Operation, pages 17 through 19 of 40.
Once the recording has started, you can disconnect the PC in software from the MAQ20 system and then disconnect the communication cable physically.
Recording the data; then you will need the PC connected once again to stop recording which also closes the data file.

There is an alternate method: remote operation and remote retrieval of data through a built-in FTP Server.

The DSCA and DSCT zero and span adjustments are made using trimpots located under the front panel label and are non-interactive for ease of use. The trimpot screw heads are behind perforated circular knockouts labeled Ø and <->. The screw heads are slotted to accept a narrow flat blade screwdriver. The zero and span adjusters are 25Turn trimpots.

The SCM7B series is defined for the process industry which has a preference for unipolar signals on the system / power supply side of the module. How to select USB to RS-232 adapters for DTF products?
Contemporary computers do not have RS-232 ports, but USB ports instead. However, there are many USB to RS-232 adapters available.
If the adapter is to be used with a device which uses the Modbus protocol or will be installed in a system which uses the Modbus protocol, the adapter must either be specified for use with Modbus or must be tested on a Modbus device for proper communications functioning.

Below are the SCM5B48 configurable parameters and their associated DIP switch designators in the order they appear left to right in the data sheet, Figure 2: SCM5B48 Side Label.

High Pass Filter, S5: DC, 0.2Hz, 10Hz

Switch S5 selects between DC coupling or AC coupling and between 0.2Hz or 10Hz low end of the High Pass filter cutoff frequencies.

Gain, S4: 1, 10, 100

Switch S4 selects from among the Gain settings = 1, 10, or 100. Since the output range is a fixed +/-10V -01 or +/-5V -02, the implication of this is that switch S4 actually selects the input voltage range as in the formula Vin = Vin max / G. Example: in an SCM5B48-01, S4 =10 the input voltage range is Vin = +/-10V / 10 = +/-0.1V.
Keep in mind, for DC coupling Vout = VAC + VDC which is limited to +/-10V total for -01 and +/-5V total for -02.

Can you explain what is the difference between the “Standard frequency range” and the “Extended frequency range” for the DSCA33 module?
The user does not have to do anything special; the module operates seamlessly over the full frequency range of 45Hz to 20kHz. We needed to split the full frequency range into two ranges so we could define and specify the different accuracy levels associated with each subrange.
If you look further down the DSCA33 Specifications under Accuracy, you will notice the Standard frequency range from 45Hz to 1kHz carries an additional +/-0.25% Reading error. This error is in addition to the +/-0.25% Span error at 50/60Hz. So the total accuracy error will be +/-0.25% Span + (+/-0.25% Reading) = +/-0.50%.
And the Extended frequency range from 1kHz to 20kHz carries an additional +/-0.75% Reading error. This error is in addition to the +/-0.25% Span error at 50/60Hz. So the total accuracy error will be +/-0.25% Span + (+/-0.75% Reading) = +/-1.00%.

With the SCM5B33-06 and SCM5B33-07, what are the included jumpers for?
You install one jumper from the +EXC to the +In terminals and the other jumper from the –EXC to the –In terminals. This allows the traces on the backpanel and the traces in the module to the current shunt to share the excess current.

What does “sensitivity” mean on my strain gage input module?
The sensitivity is listed on the datasheet to help determine what strain gages/load cells will be compatible with that module. Strain gages do not have a specific voltage output range (i.e. -30mV to 30mV) but rather a voltage output range that varies depending on the excitation voltage applied to the strain gage (its "sensitivity"). Since our strain gage modules have a fixed voltage input range and a fixed excitation voltage, the sensitivity is the most reliable way to determine if a strain gage is compatible with our module.

For example, a load cell with a 3mV/V sensitivity will output 30mV at full scale with a 10V excitation voltage, because 3mV/V * 10 V = 30mV. A signal conditioner with a 10V excitation and a -30mV to 30mV input range will be compatible with a load cell of 3mV/V sensitivity.
Can I power multiple 8B backplanes off of a single power supply?
You can use a single 5V power supply to power multiple backplanes, but you need to be aware of the current rating of your power supply and the current draw of your 8B modules. The current rating of your power supply needs to be greater than the total current draw of all the modules in your system (ideally 1.5x the total current draw). You can check the current draw of various 8B modules by checking their datasheets.

Yes, an external conversion resistor is required for the SCM5B32 module if it is to be used as a current input module. The current/voltage conversion is achieved by an external resistor, SCMXR1 as shown in the block diagram in the data sheet.

What is the recommended power supply for Dataforth SCM5B and 8B modules?
The recommended power supply for the Dataforth SCM5B and 8B modules are the linear power supplies in our SCMXPRT/SCMXPRE series. The SCMXPRT/SCMXPRE power supplies output 5V and have options for 1A output current (SCMXPRT-001) or 3A output current (SCMXPRT-003).

The SCMXPRE series is identical to its SCMXPRT counterpart, but is configured for European voltage standards.

The SCMXPRT-001/SCMXPRE-001 both have the option for DIN rail mounting as well (SCMXPRT-001D/SCMXPRE-001D).

Other power supplies that meet that power requirements of the SCM5B and 8B modules can be used as well, but it is strongly recommended to use a linear power supply rather than a switch-mode power supply. Switching power supplies can add noise artifacts to the output of your modules.
Why do Dataforth’s linearized thermocouple modules have a low bandwidth of 3-4 Hz?

The 8B41-12 module can withstand 300VDC continuous on its input terminals without damage. However, the output voltage will go to one of the internal power supply rails and remain there for several seconds after the input returns within the specified +/-60V input range."

On the Unhandled exception error in the installation process in Windows XP, ReDAQ Shape needs XP updated to SP3 in order to eliminate the exception error. Perform the following steps to clear up this issue.

Yes, two LDM Converters / Line Drivers can be setup to communicate between two remote RS-232 terminals with only TD (Transmit Data), RD (Receive Data) and GND (Ground) signals. The setup is possible only if the communication is Simplex (one-way over two-wires) or Full-Duplex (two-way over four-wires). For Half-Duplex (two-way over two-wires) communication DTR control signal is required.

Short DTR line to RLSD (Received Line Signal Detect) on both end of RS-232 terminals at the LDM connectors. The RS-232 terminals at the LDM is a DB-25 connector. For DB-25 connectors, DTR is Pin 20 and RLSD is Pin 8.

If a DB-9 to DB-25 converter is used at the RS-232 terminal then short Pin 4 (DTR) to Pin 1 (RLSD or DCD - Data Carrier Detect) on the 9-pin connector.

No, the optional plug-in conversion resistor is not shipped with nor is it required in order to use the 8B32 module. The current/voltage conversion is achieved by an internal resistor as shown in the block diagram in the data sheet.

The optional plug-in resistor could be used to shunt off some of the current from the module and allow a larger input current range; then it could also be used with voltage input modules to convert a non-standard current range into an input voltage range.

Can I use the SCMVAS-Mxxx modules standalone?
SCMVAS-Mxxx modules are high voltage input non-isolated attenuator modules. If used standalone, the module could potentially allow high voltage through to expensive data acquisition equipment. Since some USB ports provide 5VDC power, it would make sense to use them to power some accessory devices.
Before you use a USB port to power a Dataforth device, use the following check list to verify the feasibility.

Sum all the typical 5VDC current requirements of the Dataforth devices you plan to use in your application. To find out the maximum power budget, multiply the total typical current requirements by 1.5 and compare this to the total current available from the USB port.

Since Dataforth 5VDC powered devices require a +/-5% tolerance, check that the voltage is not > 5.25VDC and not < 4.75VDC with the intended load connected.

The 5B42 has separate passive input connections on +In and -In and the 8B42 does not. If you notice, the - input (pin 3) on the 8B42 has NC (No Connection) to the internal circuits of the module.
The 8BB42 can only be used with passive 2-wire transmitters because the only connection into the module is through the +EXC (excitation power out) and the + (return signal current input) connection.

Measure the RTD with an ohmmeter. If it is near the specified resistance for its type, then it is likely good.
If an RTD is not available, power the module.

Can the MAQ20-DORLY switch AC loads?
The MAQ20-DORLY can switch AC loads that comply with the ratings. The peak value of the AC signal would be used to determine if the AC signal complies with the module's ratings. This rating decreases with an increase in module temperature.

With RS-485 communicating to SLX200 I get timeout errors.
You must put the SLX200 into a known communications state. To do this, with the SLX200 powered, pull the CRST jumper off both pins then re-install the jumper over both pins. If you are running an unlicensed version of ReDAQ Shape you sill have access to all the features of the software, but are limited to 1 hour of usage until the software stops. Entering the unlock code associated with your MAQ20 system will remove the time limit and allow unlimited usage of ReDAQ Shape. The user does not have to do anything special; the module operates seamlessly over the full frequency range of 45Hz to 10kHz. We needed to split the full frequency range into two ranges so we could define and specify the different accuracy levels associated with each subrange.
If you look further down the 8B33 Specifications under Accuracy, you will notice the extended frequency range carries an additional +/-1.375% Span error and +/-3.25% Span error (-06). This error is in addition to the +/-0.25% Span error at 50/60Hz. So the total accuracy error will be +/-0.25% + (+/-1.375%) = +/-1.625% Span and . +/-0.25% + (+/-3.25%) = +/-3.50% Span.

There is not a MAQ20 module dedicated to accelerometer input. However, it’s possible to frontend a MAQ20 voltage input module with an SCM5B48 Accelerometer Input Module using the Dataforth MAQ20-5B25 interface cable. You’ll have to purchase the cable, the module(s) and the appropriate size SCM5B backplane to make it work, but it is possible. Essentially, you have the SCM5B48 process the accelerometer input, and then the voltage output of that module is connected to a voltage input module in your MAQ20 system.
I just received an SCMPB01 back panel. How should I configure jumpers J1 through J4 for my application?
The factory configuration for jumpers J1 through J4 is the optimal configuration for most applications. If for some reason this jumper configuration will not work/is not working in your application, see our application note AN502 "Ground Connections and Host System Interfaces" for other valid jumper configurations and what situations you would use them.
Is there an alternative for DC coupled input signal conditioning for signal conditioning to RMS? I understand SCM5B33-03 is AC coupled therefore it discards the offset or bias in the DC equivalent computation of the RMS whole signal.
Dataforth does not currently offer an equivalent True RMS module for DC coupled inputs, but a two module solution could be implemented depending on the parameters of the DC offset and the AC waveform.

Such an implementation was tested with an SCM5B33-03D True RMS Input Module (0-10Vrms input and 0-10VDC output) and an SCM5B31-02 Narrow Bandwidth Voltage Input Module (+/-5V input and +/-5V output). The inputs to these modules were tied in parallel and connected to a waveform generator with a specified VDC offset and VAC waveform within the input limits of the two modules. The outputs of the modules were then connected in series to get a combined output equal to the sum of their individual output voltages. Both modules were mounted on their own SCMPB03 single channel backplanes in order to maintain separate I/O COM lines for the required series connections to be made on the outputs. Alternatively a single SCMPB07 8-channel backplane could have been used since it allows for isolation of each channel's I/O COM line via a provided jumper. Please note that this combined module configuration will result in a small increase in total error since each module's parameters for accuracy are added up.

If a two module configuration is not possible for a specific application, a custom version of the SCM5B33 with revised coupling circuitry might be possible depending on the required specifications. Be aware that custom module designs are subject to NRE charges and require a 10pc minimum quantity order.

The Configuration Software Tool for MAQ20 does not have project files that can be saved. Any adjustments you make to the configuration of your modules through the Configuration Software Tool will be saved to the modules themselves, and not to a file on your PC. It is only a tool to change the settings in the modules themselves.
Can SCM7B22 drive +/-10V, 2.5mA input with 0-200Hz sine wave?
“I am generating a sine voltage signal with frequency range 0-200Hz, +/-10V using a national instruments module NI 9263 with current drive capability of 1mA. The power amplifier I am driving the sine wave generated with has an input impedance of 4K ohms .(so for a 10V sine wave input to the amplifier, it will send 2.5mA to drive it).

I am trying to double check if the SCM7B22 would be suitable for my application since it has output current capability of +/-20mA.”

It was confirmed that the SCM7B22 would be suitable for his application. I also asked him to keep in mind the 7B22 has a 400Hz bandwidth and the filter is already attenuating slightly at 200Hz. At 200Hz, the output amplitude will be about 91.4% of the input amplitude (about 8.6% attenuated).
For 8B49 modules when I give LabVIEW (or other DAQ software) an output command, I get no output from the backpanel, why?
That’s because the 8B49 and the 8B39 are output modules, are connected the reverse of input modules, they have their inputs on the system side (power supply side) of the backpanel. They provide their output on the isolated field side of the backpanel.

How long is the delay between the MAQ20 COM module reading data and that data being transferred to the host PC?
The MAQ20-COM2 / -COM4 does not buffer data for transmission, it is only a pass through for communications. The 6ms command/response cycle of acquiring data from the I/O modules in the system also includes the time it takes to transfer data to the host PC.

Can you explain what is the difference between the “Standard frequency range” and the “Extended frequency range” for the SCM5B33 module?
The user does not have to do anything special; the module operates seamlessly over the full frequency range of 45Hz to 20kHz. We needed to split the full frequency range into two ranges so we could define and specify the different accuracy levels associated with each subrange.
If you look further down the 5B33 Specifications under Accuracy, you will notice the Standard frequency range from 45Hz to 1kHz carries an additional +/-0.25% Reading error. This error is in addition to the +/-0.25% Span error at 50/60Hz. So the total accuracy error will be +/-0.25% Span + (+/-0.25% Reading) = +/-0.50%.
And the Extended frequency range from 1kHz to 20kHz carries an additional +/-0.75% Reading error. This error is in addition to the +/-0.25% Span error at 50/60Hz. So the total accuracy error will be +/-0.25% Span + (+/-0.75% Reading) = +/-1.00%.

What are the different ways I can connect to the 8BP04 to receive output data?
The 8BP04 has both a DB25 connector and output screw terminals to access the output signal from the modules mounted on the 8BP04. If you decide to use the DB25 connector we also offer the SCMXCA006-01, -02, -07 which are 1m, 2m, and 7m, varieties of a DB25 Male/Female cable assembly.

PCOM is connected to I/O COM on the SCMPB04 through the use of a factory installed 0 ohm resistor. This resistor can be removed, but would need to be soldered back on if you needed to reattach it.
Can I create a custom 4-20mA output curve from a linear 4-20mA input signal with the DSCP81?
Yes, custom non-linear output curves can be configured from a linear input with the DSCP81 using the DSCX-557 software. The DSCX-787 and DSCX-587 cables are required to connect to the PC to configure the module.
Do you have an MTBF figure for the SCM5B39? What are the main failure modes?

Can the MAQ20 save data directly to a SQL database?
No, the MAQ20 cannot save or export data directly to a SQL database. ReDAQ Shape can export data directly to a .txt, .csv or Excel file, and then the data could be extracted from those files to be uploaded to a SQL database.
If I don’t have an 8BPWR-2, can I use a +5VDC power supply to power my 8B backplane?
Yes, you can. The 8BPWR-2 is not required to power the 8B backplanes, it is used in situations where you don't have a +5VDC power supply and need to regulate the voltage of whatever current power supply you are using down to +5VDC so that it can be used for the 8B backplane.

Please make sure when choosing your +5VDC power supply that the current rating of the supply is acceptable for the total current draw of your system.

If a thermocouple is soldered to a lead that has current running through it, how do you avoid affecting the thermocouple signal and subsequent measurement?
The thermocouples must be isolated so current does not come from the circuit under test and run through them. SCM5B, SCM7B, 8B, DSCA, DSCT, MAQ20 all offer the required isolation.
On the 8B51, can I apply the + and – input leads “backwards” to reverse the polarity of the output signal?
This can be done only if the voltage source is floating (isolated); this pertains also to the SCM7B modules.
Better modules for true differential operation for which a floating source is not needed are the DSCA30/31/40/41. Other modules for this type of operation are the SCM5B30/31/40/41 used with an SCMPB07-x with the I/O COM jumpers Jn removed in the channels for which true differential operation is desired. Both the DSCA and the SCM5B outputs can float +/-50V with respect to power supply common.

If I input a 5kHz sinusoidal signal into an SCM5B40/41 module, will the output be a 5kHz sinusoidal signal as well?
Yes, signal frequencies lower than the bandwidth of the input module (10kHz for standard products) will pass through to the output. The amplitude of the voltage signal will gained/attenuated based on the I/O specifications of the module.
Can MAQ20-BRDG1 support a strain sensor such as a load cell, can it measure stress?
MAQ20-BRDG1 can measure any millivolt signal as long as it is within the limits specified for input voltage defined by sensitivity multiplied by excitation voltage and within the bandwidth. Where strain, load, weight, stress, etc. need to be measured, that is in part dependent on the sensor and how it converts those parameters into millivolts and in part on scaling in software.

The total power requirement on the DC power rail is the summation of the power requirement of the individual modules as specified in each module specification. For power budget purposes, multiply the total power requirement you calculated by 1.5 for maximum power needed.

If I were to put a 120 ohm bridge onto an 8B38-02 (range of 300 ohm to 2K ohm), what happens to the supply voltage and will the system work?
If you were to put a 120ohm bridge into an 8B38-02 the excitation voltage won’t regulate, and it won’t provide the proper amount of excitation. The load range must be in the specified range.
Can the SCM5B392-11 be used as replacement for the SCM5B32-01 for simple Analog conversion (4-20mA to 0-+5V)?
SCM5B392-xxyy are a two module pair. The intent is to have a voltage signal that can be transmitted across a long distance. When used together, an input voltage is converted to a process current, transmitted a long distance, then converted back to a process voltage.

SCM5B392-1x modules can be used in place of an SCM5B32-xx if the I/O ranges are equivalent. However, the SCM5B392-1x modules have a 1kHz bandwidth while the SCM5B32 modules have a 4Hz bandwidth.
How are unlock keys used to license IPEmotion?
Unlock keys are generated from the serial number of the COM module of the system that you purchased. These unlock codes are also generated based on how many I/O modules are in the MAQ20 system. You won't be able to run the data acquisition process in IPEmotion unless you have entered the correct unlock code for your system and the I/O module count of your system is equal to or below the allotted I/O module count determined when the unlock code was generated.

For example, if you purchased an unlock key for a MAQ20-COM2 with 1 MAQ20-VO, 1 MAQ20-VDN, and 2 MAQ20-BRDG modules, this would correspond to an I/O module count of 4. If you attempted to run the acquisition process with this configuration, it would work perfectly. If you decided to remove the two MAQ20-BRDG modules, you would still be able to run the acquisition process. However, if you were to add a MAQ20-FREQ module to your system, bringing your total I/O module count to 5, IPEmotion will not let you start the data acquisition process until the I/O module count is back to 4 or lower.

If you have more than one MAQ20-COM module in your system, it is not necessary to enter additional unlock codes for the extra COM modules.
Can the SCM5B33 be used in the SCMVAS system?
It is possible to use the SCM5B33 with SCMVAS. However, the output impedance of the SCMVAS-MXXX module at around 14.8k will be loaded by the input 1Mohm input impedance of the SCM5B33-02. This results in an approximate -1.5% positive full scale error.
I have a high-speed application that requires a module for converting current to voltage (4-20mA to 0-5V) and also from voltage to current (0-5V to 4-20mA). Due to the high-speed of the application it would be preferable if there was no internal filter. Does Dataforth have a module that could meet these requirements?
The DSCP63 DC Voltage/Current converter is a match for this application. This module provides a single channel of voltage or current input which is converted to a voltage or current output. Input/output range, filter, fault indication, square root function and other functions may be configured by dip-switch. Disabling the filter on this module will reduce response time from <74ms to <35ms.

Other modules that have configurable filters include the following: DSCP55, DSCP61, DSCP62, DSCP64, DSCP65, and DSCP81.

Can LDM and DCP devices send-receive Modbus communications?
LDM and DCP devices are electrical interface converter and line driver devices which convert RS-232 signals to current loop or differential voltage signals to go the distance and reconvert them at the far end to RS-232 signals.

LDM and DCP devices are transparent to the data rate, that is, they can operate on any standard or non-standard data rate from zero up to their max specified data rate without having to set a particular data rate. Data rate from zero? That’s right data rate from zero, meaning that the devices are static comm devices. As long as the input signal holds a voltage level corresponding to a 0 or 1 logic level, the output signal will hold that same logic level.

They do nothing more to the data than transfer it from their Dsub connectors to their output field-side terminals and from their input field-side terminals to their Dsub connector. They do not care about data formatting or timing gaps; they just pass through and retransmit the logic levels present on their inputs.

SCMVAS-Mxxx modules are actually DC attenuators because they are specified using + and – voltage limits. These are DC voltage levels or peak AC voltages. If they were meant to be AC voltage attenuators, they would be specified in Vrms.

The MAQ20-COMx module has to be powered through its power connector and it powers the backbone to power the I/O modules.
If you powered the backbone too, then that power supply would fight the power supply from the COM module and they would likely damage each other.

No, an external conversion resistor is not required in order to use the DSCA32 module. The current/voltage conversion is achieved by an internal resistor as shown in the block diagram in the data sheet.

An external conversion resistor in the case of the DSCA32 could be used to shunt off some of the current from the module and allow a larger input current range; then they could also be used with voltage input modules to convert a non-standard current range into an input voltage range.

What are feasible failure modes of the SCM5B36 and SCM5B41 devices?
The failures of the Voltage Regulator, Transformers, Oscillator, Analog Switch and the Power Supply Capacitors would cause the module output to go to 0V and the supply current will be 0mA. This failure mode may be accompanied by module supply current many times higher than published specification. These are the common failure modes. Other failure mode may result in output pegging to the output supply rail at 7.5V.

The Inputs are passive nodes and the input failures can cause the module output to go to 0V for both SCM5B41 and SCM5B36 series. The input failures of SCM5B36 may also peg the output to the negative supply rail of -7.5V.

The MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) for SCM5B36 series is 675,000 hours and the same for SCM5B41 series is 680,000 hours. This failure rate calculation is derived from the MIL-HDBK-217 (Reliability Prediction of Electronic Equipment). The "Part Stress Analysis" method is used at a ground benign environment, +30°C temperature, and quality level B-2 to D-1 depending on the component. The specified humidity level is 95% RH noncondensing.

Further the power cable to the transformer has a molded plug with 2 pins. Generally it should have 3 pins, the third pin being earth ground for an industrial power cord. Why is it not so?

In Note 4, For 0-10% Span measurements add 0.25% accuracy error (-02 through -07) or 1.00% accuracy error (-01). Accuracy error includes linearity, hysteresis and repeatability but not source or external shunt inaccuracy (if used).

Noise at the output of a module is independent of load resistance.
Is it possible to measure an AC voltage on top of a DC voltage signal with the DSCA33?
The DSCA33 is AC coupled, so it will reject the DC portion of the signal and only measure the AC portion. As long as the signal is within the protection specifications of the module (these can vary depending on the specific model of DSCA33) there will be no issue measuring VAC on top of VDC.
Is there an 8B module which can accept up to +/-50V, has >10k input resistance, <100 Ohm output resistance and can be sampled up to 250kHz?
The 8B51-12 can accept up to +/-60V input.
It has >500k Ohms input and <1 Ohm output resistance.
It could be sampled at 250kHz, but it will present unchanging data within +/-0.08% up to 92% of the samples. For it to provide new data it can be sampled up to a 20kHz sample rate.
What is the output resistance, how does the filtering work and what are the overshoot characteristics for a 8B51-03?
The 8B51-03 has an output resistance < 1 Ohm.
Its filter is a five-pole low pass filter which attenuates gradually up to the -3dB frequency of 20kHz above which it attenuates sharply at 100dB per decade of frequency. The filter has no overshoot because it is critically damped.
Why am I seeing an "Unhandled Exception: Invalid Input String" error when I click on my MAQ20-COMx module in ReDAQ Shape?
This usually has to do with the display language of the host PC being set to a language other than US English. If you are experiencing this error, please try setting the display language of your PC to "English (United States)" and then see if you are still experiencing issues. If this does not fix the problem, please contact Dataforth technical support.
What is the DC channel to channel isolation on SCM5B backpanels?
DC channel to channel isolation for all SCMPB backpanels is 2121 VDC.
Is the DSCA38-02 compatible with a load cell with a sensitivity of 2mV/V? How would it affect measurements?
For the DSCA38-02, the +/-30mV range maps to the +/-10V output; -30mV input = -10V output and +30mV input = +10V output. The sensitivity is a specification that refers to the sensitivity of the strain gauges that are fully compatible with the module.

If a DSCA38-02 is used with a load cell that has 2mV/V sensitivity, then the module's output is limited to two thirds of the full range (i.e. +/-20mV). This assumes the load cell has a rated excitation voltage of 10V. This reduced output range might be okay depending on the specific use case.
On the SCM5B modules, what is the purpose of pin 18 (Vin), why is it tied to pin 20 (Vout)? Doesn't Vout provide the output by itself?
Vout is used with input modules, which are all the SCM5B models except for the SCM5B39 and SCM5B49. Vin is used for output modules, SCM5B39 and SCM5B49.

The reason for doing this is because input modules acquire a signal from the field side, and then output a corresponding signal to the system side. On the contrary, output modules acquire a signal from the system side, and then output a corresponding signal to the field side. Since SCM5B backplanes are designed for all channels to accommodate either an input or an output module, the terminal/pin that you would normally get your output signal from if you were using an input module is the same terminal/pin that you would be feeding your input signal to if you were using an output module.
Is there a quick way to check if my SCM5B47x-xx module is operational?
With the SCM5B47x-xx connected to a proper backplane with CJC, with power being supplied, you can short the input terminals of the device to force a room temperature reading. Then you can check the output of the module and see if the output is what you're expecting. To determine what the proper output of a module is at room temperature, you'll need to look at the specific input and output range of the module you are using.
Can I supply fixed resistors to a full bridge SCM5B38 module to make my half bridge or quarter bridge strain gauge work properly with the module?
Yes, the quarter and half bridge SCM5B38 modules have the bridge completion resistors across terminals +EXC and -IN and -EXC and -IN internal to the module. Applying fixed resistors across the same terminals will have the same effect on a full bridge SCM5B38.
If I have multiple MAQ20 systems running in one instance of ReDAQ Shape, do I need an unlock code for all of them?
ALL MAQ20 systems connected to ReDAQ Shape need a valid unlock code, or else the software will stop running after 30 minutes.
Can Developer unlock codes be used with the User version of ReDAQ Shape?
Each type of unlock code is only compatible with its respective software version and associated MAQ20-COM module HW. Developer unlock codes will only work with Developer version of ReDAQ Shape and User unlock codes will only work with User versions of ReDAQ Shape.
Does the MAQ20 have capabilities for stand alone operation?
The SD Card Logger in the MAQ20 can function as a standalone data logger once configured. After initiating the log, the system can continue to log data for the rest of the configured data collection period even if it is disconnected from the host PC entirely. However, if you wish to configure another log, you must reconnect the system to the host PC. Any other logging processes with the MAQ20 require connection to the host PC for the entire logging period.
What's the difference between the User and Developer version of ReDAQ Shape?
There are two different versions of ReDAQ Shape software, Developer and User. The Developer version is fully functional with the capability of creating a project, configuring the tools, and setting up the parameters of MAQ20-COM and I/O modules. The User version can only run finished projects created using the Developer version and is for use in applications where a user does not have or should not have the ability to modify a project.
What is the resolution of the ADC in the MAQ20-ISOxx modules?
The data conversion resolution in the MAQ20-ISOxx modules is 16 bits.
Is a ReDAQ Shape license required when using a MAQ20 system as a stand-alone data logger?
No license is required to use a MAQ20 system as a stand-alone data logger. Logging to the internal Micro SD Card can be configured either in ReDAQ Shape or through direct Modbus writes to applicable register spaces of a MAQ20-COM module. If operating as a stand-alone data logger, the MAQ20 system should have no interactions with ReDAQ Shape. If ReDAQ Shape is not actively running or connected to the MAQ20 system, then no checks will be made in regards to licensing.
Does the input of the DSCA45 have a high impedance differential amplifier at the input?
Both the TTL and Zero Crossing inputs are single-ended. Both inputs have a 100kOhm input impedance in the power off condition. The TTL input has an input attenuator, so input resistance is approx. 100kOhm. For Zero Crossing input, signals under +/-0.4V don’t clamp the diode so the 100kOhm is in series with the amplifier input which provides high impedance.
What does it mean when an input module has for example a 3kHz bandwidth?
A 3kHz bandwidth on an input module means it can accept voltages from DC to 3000Hz. Any frequency higher than that and the signal will start to be attenuated by the filter at the input.
Do DSCA modules come with screw terminal blocks installed?
Yes, DSCA modules do come with the screw terminal blocks installed. The screw terminal accessories listed in our catalog are intended as replacements in case a terminal block is damaged or lost.
Some of your MAQ20 modules have a burst scan mode, can I run this mode continuously to improve system throughput?
Burst scan mode is intended to be used for debugging and signal profiling purposes. It can not run continuously. Burst scan mode can capture samples to memory in magnitudes of microseconds, but it does not have the ability to read this data back from memory at this same rate.
I need to run long sensor cables to the input of a MAQ20-BRDG1 for my application. Will this be an issue?
The MAQ20-BRDG1 has two methods to compensate for leadwire resistance: remote sense measurement and V/V ratiometric signal representation.

Remote sense measurement allows for a six wire connection to the sensor to compensate for errors introduced by leadwire resistance. For V/V ratiometric signal representation, because a Wheatstone bridge output is directly related to the bridge excitation voltage, by using a ratiometric measurement, variations in bridge output due to excitation changes over time, temperature, load, or leadwire resistance cancel out.

What voltage does the 8B47 output on an open input?
The 8B47 has an upscale open input response. Standard product 5V output modules will go to 8V for upscale. Standard product 10V output modules will go to 13V for upscale.
Does Dataforth offer any DSCA38 modules with a 10Hz bandwidth?
None of the standard DSCA38 products have a 10Hz bandwidth. However, we do offer some custom products that have 10Hz bandwidth, such as the DSCA38-1348 or the DSCA-1455. Dataforth can also design a custom product with 10Hz bandwidth, as long as the required specifications are reviewed and approved by our Engineering department. Please contact our support team if you are interested in a custom product or have any questions.
Will a 32kV signal damage the 8B47?
The 8B47 is input protected up to 240VAC and can withstand common mode voltages up to 1500Vrms max. A 32kV signal would damage the module.
Can the SD card logger in MAQ20 be used in IPEmotion?
SD card logger functionality has not been implemented in IPEmotion yet. Please contact Dataforth for more information.
I've noticed periodic positive and negative spikes in recorded temperature from my MAQ20-JTC module. How can I reduce these occurances?
The input to the MAQ20-JTC module is very sensitive. Movement of attached thermocouple wires can cause spikes in recorded data along with inherent noise present in different environments. Setting "Input Select" to the "Average" setting in ReDAQ Shape, or by direct Modbus commands can greatly reduce the variation in recorded channel data.

Signal Averaging can be set on a per-channel basis by configuring the Average Weight parameter. Average Weight is calculated as 2^x where x = 0 to 15 and the default value is x =0 . The running Average is calculated as follows: Average = Average + ((Sampled Value - Average) / Average Weight)
Does the 8B series backplanes identify the module slots on the PWB via silkscreen or other methods? Does it also mark the terminal blocks +/- inputs?
The 8B backpanels identify the module slots and their associated terminal block with silkscreen text (this includes the +/- inputs). The text is descriptive and matches up with the diagrams in our datasheets.
Does the MAQ20 Python API support USB connection?
Currently, the MAQ20 Python API only supports Ethernet connection.
Can I disconnect my MAQ20 from my PC and have the system to continue to log data?
If you start a standard logging process (i.e. clicking "run" in ReDAQ Shape or "store" in IPEmotion), disconnecting your MAQ20 system from the PC will terminate the log.

What is the output resolution of the DSCA series?
The DSCA series is completely analog, so the output resolution cannot be expressed in terms of bits as it is not a digital signal. The only thing that would cause any uncertainty/lack of clarity in your output signal would be the output ripple and noise, which is rated at a typical value of 0.025% span RMS as listed in the datasheet.
Should I ground my sensor wire shield to the 10-32 ground post on the SCMPB01?
It is not recommended to ground the sensor wire shield to the 10-32 ground post on the SCMPB01 because that is the system side ground, while the sensor wire is on the field side. The sensor wire shield should be grounded to the field side ground, which varies based on the signal conditioner you are using. Why do I see a -10V shift when I change to a DSCL23 from a DSCA42-01C or similar?
The DSCA42-01C internal electronics is powered by an overall power supply and then the module output circuitry provides the output current whose return side (or negative side) is connected internally to the power supply common. This causes the output signal to be positive with respect to the common.

Whereas, the DSCL23 is loop-powered through its output terminals. That puts the 4-20mA receiver (the load) in series with the power supply. So when you measure the voltage from the power supply common (- terminal) to the other side of the load you will see a negative signal. The module could be made usable if the power supply has a fully floating output and you can make terminal 1 (the return current terminal) the common and measure the positive signal across the load from the power supply (-) to terminal 1 (the return current terminal), the common.

A better match for your application is the DSCA42-01C. Its internal electronics is powered by an overall power supply and then the module output circuitry provides the output current whose return side (or negative side) can be connected to the power supply common. This causes the output signal to be positive with respect to the common.

To mount the module, do the following.
With the DIN rail mounted horizontally on a vertical panel, hang the hook at the top rear of the module over the top edge of the DIN rail.

Then push on the bottom front corner of the module until you hear and feel a click. Push and pull the front of the module to ensure it is securely held on the DIN rail.

To remove the module, do the following.
Using a small screwdriver, insert it into the slot on the movable clip (red for DSCA & DSCT) under the bottom rear corner of the module.
Rotate the body of the screwdriver toward the body of the module until the movable clip disengages the bottom edge of the DIN rail and you can rotate the module upward.

I'm unable to connect to my MAQ20 through an Ethernet connection. Is there a problem with my MAQ20-COM module?
To date there have been no occurrences of a MAQ20-COMx module being unable to be connected through an Ethernet connection as a result of an issue with the module's internal hardware/firmware. Connectivity issues can occur as a result of one, or a combination of the following factors: incorrect MAQ20-COMx settings, incorrect local network settings, incorrect host computer settings, network security settings, or IP address conflicts.

When shipped from factory, MAQ20-COMx modules come with the following default connectivity settings pre-loaded in memory:

IP Address: 192.168.128.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 127.0.0.1
TCP Port: 502

Assuming the above-listed default settings are not changed, reserve a static IP address of 192.168.128.100 through your local network configuration. Assigning this IP address statically will ensure that no other devices on the network will be able to claim the IP address that is intended to be used by the MAQ20-COMx module.

If not using the default IP address, the statically reserved IP address on the local network MUST start with 192.168.xxx.xxx and MUST match the non-default IP address that was saved to MAQ20-COMx module memory located at start address 50. If you need to check the IP address saved at this register address you can connect to the MAQ20-COMx through a USB connection and use ReDAQ Shape to read the register address' contents. This functionality in ReDAQ Shape can be found by clicking the "Read / Write Modbus Registers" sub-tab located after clicking the main "Analyze" tab. No license for ReDAQ Shape is required to use this functionality. Please refer to the note at the bottom of this FAQ for the host computer requirements that MUST be met to allow for connectivity.

Alternatively, the MAQ20-COMx module can be set up for Ethernet connection using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). To enable this functionality an IP address of 0.0.0.0 needs to be saved to the MAQ20-COMx's internal IP address register (Start address 50). You can write to this register through direct Modbus commands using the "Write Modbus Registers" feature located under the "Read / Write Modbus Registers" sub-tab in ReDAQ Shape. Changes to this address space will take effect upon power cycling the MAQ20 system. Once in DHCP mode, your local network will automatically assign an available IP address for the MAQ20-COMx module. You will need to access you local network configuration to determine what IP address was ultimately assigned to the MAQ20-COMx module. Once known, you can connect using the assigned IP address.

NOTE: In all motioned configurations the host computer that will be used to connect to the MAQ20-COMx module through the Ethernet connection MUST have an IP address of the form 192.168.xxx.xx (I.e. any IP address starting with 192.168. that does not match the one saved at start address 50 of the MAQ20-COMx module). The host computer MUST also have a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0.
If the input range of my signal conditioner is -1V to +1V and the output range is 0 to 10V, does this mean that it ignores polarity?
A signal conditioner with these I/O ranges does not mean that the module ignores the polarity of your voltage input. The output of voltage input modules are scaled linearly, meaning an input of -1V would correspond to an output of 0V, an input of 0V would correspond to an output of 5V, an input of +1V would correspond to an output of 10V, and so on.
Do you need to supply your own external resistor for bridge completion with the MAQ20-BRDG1 module?
If you are interfacing with a half bridge strain gage, the MAQ20-BRDG1 module contains two internal resistors, each 4.9kohms, that can complete a half bridge, so no external resistors are required. If you are interfacing with a quarter bridge strain gage, you must supply an external resistor that is equal in resistance to the resistance of your strain element, and use the "Half Bridge" completion setting in the module.
Is the SCMXPRT-003 DIN rail mountable?

Currently, ports are not selectable in the MAQ20-COMx modules and they only work with port 502. This may change in a future firmware update.
How will the measurement of my thermocouple module be affected if I use a backplane without CJC?
CJC is mandatory when using thermocouple input modules, or else you will not get an accurate measurement. Make sure to always purchase a backplane with CJC installed if you are using a thermocouple input module.
Why is the CJC enable jumper required for 8B36 if -EXC is not connected?
The CJC jumper is actually not required for the 8B36. In this case it is a “don’t care.” Some modules require it to be removed, but for the ones that don’t it is easier to just have it remain installed.

What's the function of the gARP checkbox that was added in ReDAQ Shape V2.93 to the setup tab of the COM module?
The gARP checkbox controls whether Gratuitous ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is implemented during a TCP sessions with the MAQ20. The term gratuitous in this case refers to the fact that such a request/response is not required according to ARP specification. An ARP packet broadcasted as part of an Gratuitous ARP scheme will contain the sender's IP and MAC address. Machines receiving the ARP packet will then update their ARP tables with the received packet's information. This feature is useful for preventing IP conflicts that can cause connectivity issues when communicating with a MAQ20 system over Ethernet.

Is a completion resistor required for a DSCA38 in a half-bridge configuration? If so, does the resistor come with the module?
A completion resistor is not required for a DSCA38 strain gauge module in a half-bridge configuration. Half-bridge configuration using the DSCA38 requires two active strain gauges which are denoted as Rg in the block diagrams of the module's datasheet.

A quarter-bridge arrangement uses only one active strain gauge and connects to the customer supplied resistor which is denoted as R3 in the quarter-bridge block diagram of the DSCA38's datasheet. This completion resistor is not provided since the resistance value needed will vary depending on the resistance of active strain gauge being used. When using the DSCA38 in a quarter-bridge arrangement, the resistance of R3 should match Rg. Further balancing of the bridge might be needed to offset any small differences between the resistance values of R3 and Rg.
Can the DSCA32-01 (4-20mA input and 0-10V output) be used to power a sensor?
The DSCA32-01 does not come with a dedicated loop power supply that could be used to power a sensor. The DSCA42-01, a 2-wire transmitter interface module could be used instead, since it provides the same input/output range as the DSCA32-01, with the addition of an isolated 24V power supply for powering the 2-wire transmitter/sensor.
Can a single license for ReDAQ Shape be used with multiple MAQ20-COM modules?
It's not possible to use a single license for multiple MAQ20-COM modules. Software licenses for the Developer and User versions of ReDAQ Shape are uniquely assigned based on the serial number of a purchased MAQ20-COM module. A single MAQ20-COM module can have at most two licenses associated with its serial number; one for Developer and one for User. The User license can only be used with the User Version of ReDAQ Shape and the Developer license can only be used with the Developer version of ReDAQ Shape.
Will a 2Vpp signal work with an SCM5B41-01?
Yes, as long as the peak voltage of this signal does not exceed 1V in the positive range or -1V in the negative range. Since the SCM5B series has a 1500Vrms CMR rating, this signal could also be measured on top of a much larger signal up to 1500Vrms, as long as the differential signal going into the input of the module is no higher than 1V or no lower than -1V.
What is the difference between the SCMD-MORO5 and SCMD-MORO24?

Which terminal block you connect to on an SCMD backpanel will vary based on the model number of the board or what channel you are using. As a general rule for an SCMD-MORO module, the power supply is wired over pins 3 (+V) and 5 (Gnd). The input signal is wired over pins 4 (Sgnl) and 5 (Gnd). The output signal is over pins 1 and 2. Consult the schematic of your SCMD backpanel to determine which terminal blocks correspond to each pin.

Applying custom channel names in ReDAQ Shape is for display purposes on the Acquire panel only, it does not change any information within the module. Because the SD card log takes place within the MAQ20-COMx module, separate from the Acquire panel, it is not possible to have your custom channel names from the Acquire panel in your SD card log.
Is there a demo version available for ReDAQ Shape?
Yes, the version available for download from our website can serve as a demo if you do not have an unlock code. The unlicensed software will run for 30 minutes with full functionality with no license. Once the 30 minutes is up, you can restart the program to reset the 30 minute time for as many times as you would like.
Does the LDM85 come with a power supply?
All power supplies are sold separately from the LDM85. The PT3 and PT3E are compatible power supplies with the LDM85.

The SCM9B-1000 and the SCM9B-2000 have the same physical dimensions. The SCM9B-1000 hardware is similar to the SCM9B-2000 series in every respect except that the SCM9B-2000 contains built-in commands to create custom input-to-output transfer functions.
Can I use a copper RTD that is 10 ohm at 25 degrees C with the SCM5B34C-03?
If you were to use a copper 10 ohm at 25 degrees Celsius RTD with the SCM5B34C-03 then your output would be offset by roughly 25 degrees Celsius resulting in incorrect readings. However, if you need an RTD input module with the same input/output specs as the SCM5B34C-03 that works with your RTD, we do offer the custom module SCM5B34C-1526.
What size wires do the DSCA modules accept?
DSCA module screw terminals are rated to wire gage AWG: 28 – 12.
Is the LDM35 a suitable replacement for the LDM30?
Please observe the block diagram in the datasheets of the LDM35 and LDM30 modules.

In the block diagram, you can see the direction of space current and mark current through terminals 3 and 4 (TD+ and TD-). Since these currents flow in the opposite direction between the LDM30 and LDM35, the LDM35 cannot be used to replace the LDM30.

We recommend replacing the LDM30 with another LDM30, or you can use the LDM70 as a suitable replacement as well.
What is the correct backpanel for my 8B38 module?
Any of the backpanels in the 8B series will work for the 8B38 module. In fact, any of the 8B modules can be mounted to any of the 8B backpanels.
Will the LDM85 work with LVTTL?
Because the high/low thresholds for 5VTTL and LVTTL are the same, the LDM85 will work with this standard.
Is there a smaller version available of the 8 channel SCMVAS backplane, the SCMVAS-PB8?

Yes, the DIN rail mounting hardware for the SCMPB04 can be easily detached and reattached from the board.

The DIN rail mounting of the SCMPB04 can mount to DIN rail types EN 50022-35x7.5, EN 50022-35x15, EN 50035-G32. These can be purchased as part numbers SCMXRAIL1-XX, SCMXRAIL2-XX, pr SCMXRAIL3-XX where XX is specified as the length of the rail in meters.
How far can I overrange my DSCA30/31/40/41 module? What will the effects be on the module/output?
The overrange capability is approximately 10% of the input range unless otherwise specified in the datasheet. Beyond that level the output will become nonlinear and will clamp either at a reference or power supply rail. Accuracy and linearity are not guaranteed over the minimum and maximum output.

The module will not be damaged in any way unless the input exceeds the input protection specification, which is 240Vrms continuous.
Will I damage the input of my DSCA40-02 if I apply a 12V signal?
All DSCA40 and DSCA30 modules are input protected up to a continuous 240Vrms signal. 12V is well below that rating and will not damage the module.
Is it possible to utilize remote CJC with the 7B47 modules?
SCM7B47 modules are designed to interface the 100k NTC thermistors which are installed on the SCM7B backpanels. Therefore, remote CJC is only possible if the 100k thermistor is replaced with a fixed resistor which requires a custom backpanel.
Is it possible to get 0-40mA output but connecting two SCM5B39 modules in parallel?
Yes, this can achieved by connecting the positive output of the two modules together, and connecting this to one end of a load resistor. Then, connect the negative output of the two modules together, and connect this to the other end of the load resistor.
If someone accidentally connected a powered sensor (0-5V analog signal) to the input of an 8B38 would it damage it?
The 8B38 has an input protection of 240VAC continuous, so a 0-5V input will not damage the device. You can apply a continuous signal of up to 240VAC before the input will start to get damaged.
Can I measure a small potential on top of a 1500V signal with the DSCA30/31 module?
The DSCA30/31 has an input to output isolation of 1500Vrms, meaning that it is possible to measure small potentials on top of a 1500V common mode voltage. This will not damage the module.
Whats the difference between SCM5B37 modules and SCM5B47 modules?
SCM5B47 module output is linearized with respect to the input temperature. SCM5B37 modules require a special calculation to determine the input temperature from a given output voltage. Are the terminal blocks removable on the DSCA37 and DSCA47 modules?
The upper copper terminal block of the DSCA37 and DSCA47 (pins 6, 7, & 8) are not removable. Those terminal block are directly soldered to the circuit board and contain cold junction compensation (CJC) circuitry. The bottom plastic terminal block (pins 1, 2, 3, & 4) are removable though.
